Seaford: Waterfront, NYC access, tight-knit community vibes draw buyers
THE SCOOP Seaford is an old-fashioned community, with plenty of civic-minded residents and neighbors who take pride in their community.
The area's family-friendly events and activities help foster a close-knit atmosphere, said Stella Tam, an agent with The DH Citadel Real Estate.
"It really is the perfect place if you want to settle your roots and raise your family," said Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin. Noting its easy access to Manhattan via the LIRR and other parts of the Island by highway, he added, "No matter where you work, it's convenient to get there."
The hamlet is home to the Seaford Historical Society Museum, originally a schoolhouse turned firehouse; Tackapausha Museum and Nature Preserve, a zoology museum with environmental exhibits; and Seaman's Neck Park, which has multiple turf fields, a fishing pier and kayak ramp.
Growing up next door in Wantagh, Chris Schneider, vice president of the Wantagh-Seaford Homeowners Association, now resides in Seaford.
"You have the pleasures of a seaside community with proximity to the big city," Schneider said of Seaford. "It's a tight knit community where people help each other, people look out for each other, people care about each other. It's just a great place to live."
Native Americans hunted, fished and lived in the area before it was settled by Capt. John Seaman, a native of Seaford, England, who oversaw the development of "Jerusalem South." In 1868 the hamlet was officially named Seaford, in honor of Seaman, and remained a farming and fishing village with a post office, church and one-room schoolhouse and a scant few hundred residents for more than a century.
In the mid-1800s, local baymen invented the "Seaford skiff," a flat-bottom sailboat that easily navigated shallow waters and was soon used all along the Eastern Seaboard.
Though it became a summer retreat for city folks, Seaford didn't lose its rural character until after the opening of Sunrise Highway in 1929.
Today, homebuyers will find mostly Capes, ranches, Colonials and split-level houses.
CONDOS AND CO-OPS There are no condos or co-ops on the market.
SALE PRICES Between Aug. 9, 2023, and Aug. 8, 2024, there were 151 home sales with a median sale price of $681,000, according to OneKey MLS. During that period a year earlier, there were 162 home sales with a median sale price of $627,500.
