Mets fans hoping to watch Juan Soto’s first at-bat with the club legally via streaming devices were unable to do so.
Service on MLB.TV was down as the Mets’ Opening Day matchup with the Astros got started just after 4 p.m. Thursday. Mets broadcaster SNY, which previously streamed Mets games with its own app, moved its streaming coverage to MLB’s service beginning this season.
Soto singled up the middle with one out in his first Mets plate appearance. MLB.TV service was restored with the game scoreless in the second inning.
SNY announced a direct-to-consumer streaming service in partnership with MLB in February, ending the Mets’ distinction as the only local MLB, NBA or NHL team without such an option for fans. It is available for purchase through the MLB app and took effect with the Mets’ first spring training game.
Fans in SNY’s footprint, which includes New York and New Jersey, who currently get the channel through their pay TV subscriptions are also able to access Mets games through the MLB app at no extra charge.
