People magazine on Wednesday named model and former soccer star David Beckham this year's Sexiest Man Alive, succeeding 2014's Chris Hemsworth.
"It's a huge honor," Beckham, 40, told the magazine. "And I'm very pleased to accept." He is the 30th man so named in the feature, which began in 1985 with Mel Gibson.
The native Londoner contended, "I never feel that I'm an attractive, sexy person. . . . I mean I like to wear nice clothes and nice suits and look and feel good, but I don't ever think of myself that way."
He said he hoped his wife, fashion designer and former Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham, 41, "feels this way about me all the time anyway! But she said, 'Congratulations!' " He added, "We kind of laughed about it with the boys, and the boys kind of laughed at me and said, 'Really?! Sexiest man alive? Really?' "
The couple, who married on July 4, 1999, have three sons -- Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 12, and Cruz, 10 -- and a daughter, Harper, 4. The eldest, David Beckham said, kidded him about the magazine cover accolade. "Brooklyn was the one who was like, 'Are you sure it's not me that's meant to be there today?' "
