Nassau County police are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian in Hempstead early Saturday morning, according to a news release from the department.

The crash happened just after 2 a.m. A 66-year-old man was crossing North Franklin Avenue in Hempstead when the driver of a 2024 Hyundai going south struck him near the intersection with Centre Street, police said.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead by a hospital physician shortly after the accident, according to the Nassau police news release. The agency is not releasing the victim's name until it notifies his family.

The car involved in the crash was driven by a 48-year-old man who remained at the scene until first responders arrived, police wrote in the news release.

The Nassau County Homicide Squad is investigating the incident.
