Barnes & Noble closing store in Huntington Station
The Barnes & Noble on Route 110 in Huntington Station just south of the Walt Whitman Mall is set to close in January, according to a spokeswoman for the landlord.
The bookseller and landlord could not reach a lease agreement, according to Barnes & Noble officials.
"We worked aggressively to structure an economic agreement that made sense for Barnes & Noble and the property owner," David Deason, vice president for development at Barnes & Noble, said in an email.
"However, the owner has decided to divide the store up into smaller spaces and lease to other retailers at rents we simply cannot afford."
Andrea Simpson, spokeswoman for Federal Realty, the Maryland-based landlord, said the company is "in conversation" with several tenants to lease the 24,930-square-foot space.
"I can't comment too much more because we're very sensitive about commenting in regard to business with our clients and tenants," Simpson said.
"But I can confirm their expiring lease and I can share with you we're talking with several tenants that would add to the exciting mix at the shopping center," she added.
She said they are hoping to announce a new tenant sometime in the next few months.
Other stores in the shopping center include Petsmart, Toys R Us, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Dress Barn, Applebee's and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
Barnes & Noble officials did not respond to requests for comment on whether the store would relocate, and whether employees would be laid off or transferred to other stores.
