Accounting firm Deloitte & Touche is in the beginning stages of a two-year expansion on Long Island, a company official said.

Since May, the company has hired 26 more employees, growing its local workforce to 185 employees. Deloitte's Long Island office is in Jericho. The company is headquartered in Manhattan.

The Long Island growth is planned to continue for the next year and a half, Deloitte's Long Island managing partner Mark Davis wrote in an email.

Davis emphasized growth opportunities in the mid-market for Deloitte, pointing out that medium-size companies make up a larger part of the U.S. economy than most realize. Even though economic growth has been stagnant lately, Davis said the firm has been expanding its business by increasing the scope of services to clients.

Locally, "sectors like health care, manufacturing, retail and technology continue to grow" in the region, Davis said.

Deloitte has had an office on Long Island for more than 40 years. In 2009, the company renewed its lease at its current offices at Two Jericho Plaza.
