The magnetic resonance imaging company Fonar Corp., of Melville, has sold one of its scanning machines to a California medical practice.

The Upright Multi-Position MRI was sold to the a Bakersfield, Calif., clinic, Fonar said in a Wednesday news release.

Fonar's MRI machines allow patients to remain sitting or standing, mostly unenclosed, during imaging -- contrasting with the sometimes claustrophia-inducing experience of lying down and being encased in a standard MRI's tunnel-like bed, the company said.

A surgeon at the California practice, Dr. Afaq Kazi, said in a Fonar news release that about one-fifth of his patients reject the standard MRI machine because they feel claustrophobic, but with the Upright MRI there is "virtually no rejection from patients with claustrophobia."

Fonar did not disclose the selling price of the MRI machine.
