Former Newsday editor John Mancini, who resigned in December, has joined NY1 as transit reporter, the Time Warner Cable news channel announced.

NY1/Noticias vice president of news Bernie Han told the staff of the appointment in an internal memo circulated Thursday. In a phone interview, Mancini - who joked that "I'm the world's oldest cub reporter" (he is 49) - said: "My newspaper career, which is largely at Newsday, was a very complete adventure. I was lucky to get a job as a clerk in 1980 and walked out quite recently as the editor. I had no unfinished business in newspapers.

"But I've always dreamed about getting involved in television, and NY1 is a great place to cover news in the city. They had enough imagination to envision me in this role. It's a very good fit with a very good organization, and I'm thrilled to have an opportunity to try something new."

Han said, "John and I have known each other for many years because NY1 and Newsday have worked together a lot. . . . He impressed me immensely with his knowledge of New York City and his passion for the subject matter."

Mancini had been editor and executive vice president of Newsday since 2004 and before that held various other editorial positions at the paper. He has also worked as metro editor at the New York Post, editor of the Long Island Voice and as an editor at The New York Times.
