A subsidiary of Hauppauge-based Globecomm Systems Inc. said Wednesday that it has been awarded a three-year maritime managed-services contract with a Singapore shipper.

Globecomm did not provide the terms of the deal involving its Cedar Knolls, N.J.-based subsidiary, Telaurus Communications.

The contract with PACC Ship Managers Pte Ltd. of Singapore calls for Telaurus to provide its FB500 maritime fleet broadband terminals and its se@COMM maritime communications platform to 30 vessels trading worldwide.

Telaurus said its se@COMM system manages the communication needs of the vessel master - the captain - and the shipping company.

It said the communications system "not only provides a highly functional e-mail solution for both the ship's business and crew use, but also very effectively controls broadband connectivity so that the ship manager does not incur expensive charges due to unnecessary or nonapproved data connections."

With the system, customers can see the price of sending each message before transmission, making it easier to budget and control costs. The system also provides anti-virus protection, Web browsing and shore-based remote diagnostics, troubleshooting and monitoring.

Globecomm provides active managed services on more than 2,000 vessels through its maritime division, the company said.

In a news release, Malcolm McMaster, president of Telaurus, said the company's software will allow PACC Ship Managers to "maximize the efficiencies that broadband connectivity offers and at the same time effectively manage and control data transmissions that, without such controls, can become extremely costly."
