Health care reform is inevitable, Henry Schein Inc. chief executive Stanley Bergman said at a conference in Woodbury.

Speaking at a meeting of Professional Women in Healthcare Wednesday evening at the Fox Hollow Country Club, Bergman said that among the industry's changes is a move toward preventive care.

"We are moving from sick care to health care," he said. "Reform is here to stay."

Among the changes afoot is a move away from reliance on hospitals.

"Health care is moving from big buildings," said Bergman, who became the company's chairman and chief executive in 1989. Melville-based Henry Schein distributes products used by dental, medical and veterinary practitioners in their offices and is Long Island's largest public company based on revenue.

Professional Women in Healthcare is a national organization that promotes career advancement for women.
