Jericho-based Airport Plazas LLC. has scheduled a grand opening Tuesday Sept. 14 for a 1.3-acre service plaza at Newark Liberty International airport for private car, livery or truck drivers to wait for passengers or refuel their vehicles or themselves.
The Newark facility offers a Gulf gasoline station, light auto repairs, car wash, emergency towing, a lounge, a 7-11 convenience store and restrooms.
Airport Plazas announced May 6 that the Port Authority also had chosen it to design, build and operate a similar but larger center on a now-underutilized 7.5 acres on the west side of the JFK expressway near Kennedy Airport, set to open about the middle of next year. The JFK center will include a filling station selling gasoline and diesel; an auto repair shop; car wash; convenience store; restaurants; a place to drop off and pick up dry cleaning; and free Wi-Fi connections and flight information. Across the street from the center will be a parking lot for truckers.
The company said the Newark and JFK center centers each will employ about 60 people.
A subsidiary of GAZ Realty, Inc., also of Jericho, Airport Plazas says it also has approvals for others at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Tulsa International Airport, and Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers.
