Applied DNA Sciences, Inc., a company that uses plant DNA to make anti-counterfeiting products, has hired former Stony Brook University official Karol Kain Gray as its chief financial officer.

Gray has 35 years of financial, organizational and management experience, most recently at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she was vice chancellor for finance and administration and helped oversee a $3.4 billion budget.

"We are thrilled to bring her incredible experience and range of skills to the company,” Applied DNA chief executive and president James A. Hayward said.

Gray, a former Applied DNA board member, held a series of positions at Stony Brook, including controller, vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer for the Stony Brook Foundation. She is a Hofstra University graduate.

Gray starts at Applied DNA in October. She replaces Kurt Jensen who resigned effective Wednesday, Aug. 21, after seven years at the Stony Brook company to pursue other interests.
