Leviton Manufacturing Corp., the Melville-based electrical device maker, has scored a major agreement with Ford Motor Co. to produce portable home charging stations for the Focus electric car.
Ford said it “jointly developed” the Focus charging station with Leviton. Including installation, the Evr-Green Ford Focus recharger will retail for about $1,499.
“One of the main advantages of the charging station is the nonpermanent-style installation,” Ford says on its Web page for the Evr-Green charger.
The charger doesn’t need to be hard-wired into the electrical breaker box, but plugs into a 240-volt outlet.
“The charging station for the Ford Focus Electric can be easily installed, replaced or upgraded without the use of tools due to its innovative design and mounting bracket,” Ford said.
The design makes “removal and replacement a simple unplug and plug back in.”
Privately-held Leviton makes electrical wiring devices, data connectivity solutions and lighting energy management systems.
