Long Island's unemployment rate continued its rise in July, jumping to 8 percent last month -- up 0.8 percent from the same period in 2011, according to the State Labor department.

The unemployment rate on Long Island has not been at or above 8 percent since February 2010, when the figure was at 8.2 percent.

Just last week, the state announced that the Long Island area added a modest 7,500 jobs in July compared to last year.
