Northwell Health has received a $1 million donation from a Port Washington-based foundation to help fund a new trauma suite at North Shore University Hospital.

The 1,400-square-foot Peter & Jeri Dejana Foundation Trauma Suite will include five private rooms in the Petrocelli Advanced Surgical Pavilion, which is under construction at the Manhasset hospital, Northwell said Tuesday. The seven-story, 280,000-square-foot pavilion is expected to be complete by the end of 2023.

In addition to its Level 1 Trauma Center, rooftop helipad and air ambulance service, North Shore also includes the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital, the Katz Women’s Hospital and the Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery. The hospital’s emergency room treats 85,000 patients each year, according to the New Hyde Park-based Northwell.

The donation, part of Northwell's $1 billion fundraising campaign, “will help create a state-of-the-art suite of single-bedded patient rooms where clinicians specializing in trauma care can monitor and closely manage our most severely ill patients,” Dr. Matthew Bank, chief of acute care surgery and trauma medical director at North Shore, said in a statement.

The foundation was founded in 2011 by Peter Dejana, a Port Washington developer, and his wife, Jeri. The group focuses on Long Island organizations that focus on health care, education and other programs. It has also helped fund North Shore’s helipad and a COVID-19 PCR testing site in the Town of North Hempstead.

Peter Dejana said in a statement, “Jeri and I want to support patients during their most desperate times of need and enable the highest quality of care and medical attention they may require.”
