Northwell Health opening new cancer care center in Bay Shore

Northwell Health on Friday said its first cancer care center in Suffolk County will be fully operational by mid-November.

The $46.5 million, 46,000-square-foot Imbert Cancer Center replaced a former King Kullen supermarket at 440 E. Main St. in Bay Shore.

The new facility is Northwell’s second-largest of its kind on Long Island, behind Monter Cancer Center in Lake Success.

The center will offer medical oncology, radiation therapy, surgical oncology and diagnostic services.

“This provides the opportunity for us to deliver cancer care to the population of Suffolk County,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive at Northwell Health. “We are bringing cancer care closer to where the people are.”

While some services are already operating, surgical oncology and radiation oncology won’t open until mid-November.

The facility is named after Susan and Rick Imbert, Bay Shore residents who made an undisclosed donation to Northwell to help build the center.

Northwell isn’t the first hospital system to expand its cancer care in Suffolk County. Earlier this month, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan officially expanded its Commack clinic by 38,000 square feet.

MSK Commack is now more than 91,000 square feet, the organization said in a news release.
