NY auto show spotlights experimental, anniversary car models
About 60 production and experimental vehicles are to be unveiled at the New York International Auto Show.
They range from a redesigned Honda Fit subcompact and refreshed Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Jetta and Chrysler 200 family sedans, to the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, a $136,000 BMW sports car and a $260,000 restyled Ghost from Rolls-Royce.
Experimental models, known as concept vehicles in the industry, will include Toyota's FCHV-adv -- a fuel-cell-powered Highlander SUV -- and a Ford Edge SUV that hints strongly at the next generation.
Ford, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Mustang this year, also will feature the 2015 model due at dealerships in the fall, while Mazda celebrates the 25th birthday of the MX-5 Miata with a special edition of the little roadster, and Dodge celebrates its 100th anniversary with redesigned Charger and Challenger muscle cars.
Following are some of the other new vehicles to be on display:
Acura: The 2015 TLX, a midsize luxury sedan, is to be shown for the first time anywhere. It's to go on sale this summer.
Alfa-Romeo: The unit of Italy's Fiat returns to America with the 4C, a mid-engine sports car to go on sale "about the middle of this year," according to sister company Chrysler.
Audi: A new A3 is to be shown, according to show organizers.
BMW: The new i8 sports car, a plug-in hybrid, is due at dealerships in late summer with a gasoline engine powering the rear wheels and an electric motor driving the fronts.
Also new are the X4 midsize SUV, starting at $45,625 when it goes on sale in early summer, and a midsize, four-door 4 Series Gran Coupe, starting at $41,225 and reaching dealerships about the same time.
Cadillac: The coupe version of the BMW-fighting ATS will be shown, and it's scheduled to join the sedan at dealerships this summer. Cadillac also will show a concept vehicle, the Elmiraj, a sports coupe with a 500-hp. V-8.
Chevrolet: The Corvette ZO6 goes on sale late in the year. Chevy also is showing an updated Cruze.
Chrysler: The 2015 200 goes on sale soon, priced at $21,700 to start. It has an unusual nine-speed automatic transmission and available all-wheel drive.
Dodge: The 2015 Challenger and Charger are to go on sale in the third and fourth quarters of this year, respectively.
Ford: Besides the new Mustang and the Edge concept, the automaker is headlining its redesigned full-size pickup, the F-150, to go on sale late this year, and a redesigned Focus sedan.
GMC: GM's truck brand highlights the 2015 GMC Canyon midsize SUV, going on sale in the fall, and the new 2015 Yukon large SUV, on sale now.
Honda: The redesigned 2015 Fit goes on sale officially Monday, starting at about $15,000.
Hyundai: A redesigned Sonata midsize sedan, due to go on sale in late spring, is being shown along with an all-new Genesis luxury sedan, to go on sale later this month starting at $38,000.
Jaguar/Land Rover: The Jaguar F-Type R Coupe goes on sale next month starting at $65,000. Also scheduled to be at Javits is the Jaguar C-X17, a concept SUV. A concept Land Rover Discovery hints at the next generation of the SUV.
Jeep: The 2015 Renegade, a new mini SUV, will be shown for the first time in North America at Javits. To be built in Italy, it will go on sale toward the end of this year globally with a variety of powertrains, including a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine for U.S. buyers.
Kia: Hyundai's sister brand plans to unveil a new Sedona minivan at the show. Kia also is showing a concept car, the GT-4 Stinger, a four-seat coupe with a 315-hp. turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Lexus: Unveiled at Detroit's auto show in January, the 2015 LC-F is a new 450-hp. sports car due at dealerships in the fall.
Mercedes-Benz: The S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe will be shown for the first time anywhere, with a 577-hp. engine and a price of about $160,000 when it reaches dealerships on October. A European-spec 2015 C-Class, which reaches the United States in Americanized form in September, also is to be displayed at Javits.
Nissan: A redesigned midsize 2015 Murano SUV will be on display, and it's due at dealerships in the fall. Also being shown is a front-wheel-drive, V-6-powered sport sedan concept, hinting at the design of a future model.
Subaru: The carmaker will show its new all-wheel drive Outback and also is featuring redesigned WRX and WRX STI sport sedans that just went on sale as 2015 models, at $26,295 and $34,495, respectively.
Toyota: Besides the refreshed Camry and fuel-cell Highlander, the carmaker will show the FT-1, a front-engine, rear-drive concept sports car.
Volkswagen: A refreshed Jetta and the new Golf SportWagen will be shown. The 2015 Jetta goes on sale in the fall and the SportWagen in the first quarter of next year.
Volvo: The automaker will show a new user interface for managing vehicle systems such as audio and navigation, to appear first next year on the XC90 SUV. It also will show an experimental self-driving car, a variant of the V60 station wagon.
