Orbit lands $1.1M gun parts deal

In its second contract announcement so far this week, Orbit International Corp. says it has a $1.1 million to supply weapons control panels for U.S. Navy destroyers and cruisers.
The Hauppauge defense contractor said the multiyear contract to build MK 437 gun mount panels will begin in midyear.
The contract was procured by Orbit's Louisville, Ky., subsidiary, Integrated Combat Systems Inc.
The gun mount control panel is a component of the Naval MK 160 Gun Computer System.
This system remotely controls artillery including Gatling guns and 5-inch guns capable of automatically firing 16-20 rounds per minute with a range of 13 nautical miles.
The MK 437 control panel is used on all AEGIS cruisers and destroyers, and is operationally integrated with the 5-inch/54 MK-45 Gun Mount systems, the company said.
Among the ships using the system are the Ticonderoga-class USS Choisin, above, nicknamed "War Dragon", a guided missile cruiser equipped with two 5-inch 54-caliber guns, and two Phalanx Gatling guns capable of firing 4,500 rounds per minute.
