Southampton’s vacant post office sells for $3 million

A Southampton post office that’s been vacant since 2009 has been sold for $3 million to luxury residential brokerage firm Brown Harris Stevens.

Located at 39 Nugent St., the red brick, Colonial-style building served as the area’s post office for more than 40 years before operations were moved to a larger facility on North Sea Road about seven years ago. The building’s landlord, Bobrow Postal Associates, a family business owned by Norman Bobrow, has been trying to sell the 6,700-square-foot property since 2011.

After receiving no offers on a $6.5 million asking price in 2011, having a lease agreement fall through with TD Bank, and failing in an attempt to sell the site to film director Steven Spielberg, the owners placed the property on an online auction at Auction.com in 2014. No deals “came to fruition” as a result of the auction, an outside spokeswoman said.

“We are happy to close a deal and finally say goodbye to the post office,” Bobrow said in a statement. “But it will be the end of an era for us.”

Bobrow’s father, Louis Bobrow, left the building and other properties to his 16 heirs when he died in 2006. According to the Bobrow family, Louis owned the most post office properties in the state at one point.

Brown Harris Stevens, a firm owned by New York City luxury developer Kent Swig, originally planned to turn the building into a new brokerage office, but instead plans to hold the building as an investment property, according to a news release. The deal closed in March.
