National apparel and home decor retailer Stein Mart will open its first store on Long Island this month.

The 31,000-square-foot store is located in the Mayfair Shopping Center at Jericho Turnpike and Beechwood Lane in Commack, in a space previously occupied by MJM Designer Shoes. The opening is set for Sept. 24. Stein Mart's stores, on average, employ 42 associates.

Headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, Stein Mart offers fashion apparel for women and men, as well as accessories, shoes and home decor. Its website says it offers brand-name fashion and home merchandise at prices up to 60 percent below department store prices. The Commack store is one of nine new stores that Stein Mart is opening this fall.

"We've had our eye on the Long Island area for quite some time," said Jay Stein, CEO of Stein Mart. "We have all intentions of adding more stores to this market and look forward to being part of the Commack community for a long time."

Founded in the early 1900s as a single store in Greenville, Mississippi, Stein Mart currently operates about 270 stores in 30 states and an Internet store. The company will open 10 new stores this year and has plans to open at least 12 stores in 2016.
