Stop & Shop to shutter location in Hempstead village

A Stop & Shop grocery store in Hempstead village will close its doors for good June 15.
“We’re making the very difficult decision and we’re making it after an extensive analysis of our store base,” said spokesman Philip Tracey, who said the store was underperforming.
The 100 full- and part-time employees at the store will be transferred to other Stop & Shop locations, including those in West Hempstead and Carle Place, the company said.
“Jobs won’t be impacted,” Tracey said.
Pharmacy prescriptions will be transferred to the Carle Place store, which will deliver medications for free to Hempstead customers.
The approximately 50,000-square-foot Hempstead store has been on Fulton Avenue in The Hub Shopping Center since 2001, Tracey said.
The shutdown is not part of any other closings in the region, he said.
Headquartered in Quincy, Massachusetts, Stop & Shop is a regional chain that has 411 stores in five states, including 50 locations on Long Island. The company is a unit of Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize, whose other grocery stores include Hannaford and Food Lion.
