Shop for food and fuel gas savings. That's the new rewards program that starts today from Stop and Shop supermarkets and participating Shell gas stations on Long Island, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Shoppers can get as much as $2.20 off per gallon -- if they can amass $2,200 in qualifying purchases before points expire 30 days after the purchase.

At a time when consumers are diligently price shopping, the program could draw more customers to Shell’s 78 Long Island stations and the supermarket’s 55 locations here.

"With Gas Rewards, Stop & Shop customers get the most value every time they shop," said Ron Onorato, division president of Stop & Shop New York Metro. "We will continue to explore and deliver programs and partnerships like this that provide real value to our customers when they need it most."

Officials will unveil the new rewards program today at the Shell station in Syosset. The supermarket’s gas rewards had existed only at their own gas stations, which have not been built on Long Island.

"We recognize that Americans are continuing to approach purchasing decisions with caution, even for everyday necessities such as fuel,” said Dan Little, North America fuels marketing manager for Shell Oil Products U.S. "

Supermarket shoppers earn one point for every dollar spent on qualifying purchases and every 100 points equals .10 cents off per gallon at the pump. Points must be used within 30 days, and up to 2,200 points can be used per Shell visit for up to $2.20 off per gallon. The discount applies to a maximum of 35 gallons per fill up.

Drivers swipe their Stop and Shop cards at the pump or punch in the key tag’s 13-digit number. Points can be tracked on their supermarket receipts or online.

Most purchases will qualify, including some deliveries, but not tobacco, gift cards, prescription drugs and liquor.
