Blockbuster game over? Redbox kiosks expand to video game rentals

Redbox, the DVD and Blu-Ray rental company that stuck those conspicuous big red vending machines into many of our supermarkets, announced it’s getting into video game rentals.

The company said each of their kiosk’s will carry anywhere from 22 to 28 of the most recent console games from the PS3, Wii, and the Xbox 360. Each game will cost $2 per day -- higher than the $1.50 daily charge Redbox places on Blu-ray rentals or $1 for DVDs.

"From your local grocery, convenience or drug store straight to your family room, the next dance off, face off or family night just got more affordable and fun," said Redbox vice president Joel Resnik in a press release.

Some of the titles that are already available include: Transformers Dark of the Moon; Brink; Call of Duty: Black Ops; Duke Nukem Forever; Infamous 2; Michael Jackson: The Experience.

This could be another nail on Blockbuster’s coffin. The former rental giant is now in bankruptcy, but it was still the only major brick and mortar chain store left where consumers could go in person to browse and rent games.

There are 180 Redbox kiosks between Suffolk and Nassau counties. ShopRite, Walmart, and 7-Eleven are just some of the local stores with the big red machines. You can go to www.redbox.com to find the kiosk nearest you.
