Top 10 lame excuses used to get out of work, survey says

Life happens, and sometimes it interferes with the office. But according to a recent CareerBuilder study, some excuses that employees give their employers to skip out on work are flat-out ridiculous.

From dinner plans to one-night stands, the company found a host of lame reasons through its survey of 3,103 workers and 2,203 hiring managers. The annual survey also found that nearly one in five employers have fired an employee for phoning in a fake excuse.

The survey, conducted between Aug. 11 and Sept. 5, 2014, found 28 percent of workers have called in sick when they were feeling fine, down from 32 percent last year. In fact, 11 percent said they called in sick just because the weather was bad.

When it comes to employers, the study found 31 percent checked to see whether an employee was telling the truth when calling out sick, often demanding a doctor's note. About 15 percent of employers actually drove past their worker's house to confirm.

But it's not just bosses who are busting fakers. About 24 percent of employers caught workers on their lies through social media updates. Of that group, 22 percent fired the employee.

- I just put a casserole in the oven.

- My plastic surgery needed some "tweaking" to get it just right.

- I was sitting in the bathroom when my legs fell asleep. When I stood, I fell and broke my ankle.

- I woke up in a good mood and don't want to ruin it.

- I was at the casino all weekend and still had money to gamble with on Monday.

- I had an unexpected tryst last night and I don't know where I am.

- I've gotten stuck in a supermarket blood pressure machine.

- I have a gallstone that I want to heal holistically.

- I tried to dry my uniform in the microwave and it caught fire.

- I accidentally got on a plane.
