How much do you need to make to be middle class on Long Island? What about the United States? A recent Planet Money report on NPR broke out how much it costs to be considered middle class in major cities in the United States.

The U.S. median household income was $64,000, as of a 2013 study conducted by the Census Bureau; IPUMS USA and the University Of Minnesota. Here is a look at what the median income is in major markets, including New York. Newsday added the median household income for Nassau County and Suffolk County to compare the Long Island region to the rest of the nation.

The study was done using the Census Bureau's 2013 American Community Survey.
