Learn how to calculate your MPG

While some vehicles are equipped with a minute-by-minute gauge that shows just how many miles per gallon your vehicle is getting, most of us are left wondering what our MPG really is. For those who don't have an MPG gauge, here's how to manually calculate your MPG and get a real sense of how fuel efficient your vehicle and your driving habits are.
1. Go to a gas station and fill up the fuel tank.
2. Before pulling away from the pump record the mileage on the odometer. Write this number as "Mileage A."
3. Drive as you normally would until the tank is less than half full.
4. Fill up the tank again. This time, pay attention to how many gallons it takes to fill up the tank.
5. Record the mileage again, just like before. Write this number as "Mileage B."
6. Subtract Mileage A from Mileage B. This will give you the number of miles you have driven since your last fill-up.
7. Divide the number of miles you have driven by the number of gallons it took to fill up your tank.
That number is your car's MPG.
