Asharoken's second-largest piece of property, a 21.9-acre peninsula on Duck Island, has finally found a buyer.

John Rittenhouse, chief executive of EDF Trading, says that he is in contract to purchase the land.

The asking price for the property and its house is currently $8 million. It first came on the market in 2011 for $12 million. The sale is expected to be final in September or October, says Jacqueline Lewisy of Signature Premier Properties, the listing agent. Michelle Glennon of Laffey Fine Homes brought Rittenhouse to the deal.

Rittenhouse, who lives in London, is from Asharoken and still owns a piece of rental property in the village. The 55-year-old's father is the former police commissioner and his mother, a former zoning board member. "I'm going back to my roots," he says.

He says he doesn't plan to sell off pieces of the property, which has been in the same family for more than eight decades. He says he is "just going to own it and enjoy it." His plan is to move back permanently when he retires.

The 6,722-square-foot Swedish Manor-style main house has 11 bedrooms and 6½ baths. There is a guesthouse and barn as well as a pond, wine cellar, 5,000 feet of private beachfront and a baseball field.

Lewisy says she expects the sale to set a record for the Northport area.
