A Bay Shore house with a prominent portico is on the market for $425,000.

The 1900 house was built by the Hertz family, whose patriarch was a well-heeled New York City attorney, says listing agent Megan Gardner of Meg Smith Associates. As many wealthy people did in that era, the Hertz family used the home primarily as a summer residence, she adds.

“They owned a large expanse of land in the area, back in the time before Sunrise Highway or even cars, when this was fertile farmland,” says Gardner.

The current owners, who bought the home in 2008, are only the third family to have lived in the house.

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom house has an eat-in-kitchen, sunroom and full basement.
