THE SCOOP The village of Great Neck Estates turned 100 years old last year. Incorporated in 1911, it is one of nine villages on the Great Neck Peninsula.
Close to Manhattan, the scenic peninsula has had its share of famous residents, including author F. Scott Fitzgerald, who lived in Great Neck Estates. It was from there that he was inspired to write "The Great Gatsby."
"The village has beautiful, tree-lined streets. Some of them are hilly," says Edna Mashaal, broker-owner of the Great Neck-based real estate agency that bears her name.
Residents have access to a waterside park, complete with pools, tennis courts, athletic fields and a playground as well as a marina and dock area. There's also another park with a duck pond.
Middle Neck Road offers a plethora of upscale shops and restaurants. Houses of worship are nearby. And the Great Neck train station is a commuter's delight, with some trains traveling to Penn Station in less than 30 minutes.
As for village neighborhoods, the east side of Bayview Avenue is dominated by Colonials and Tudors priced from about $1 million to more than $3 million, Mashaal says; the west side has mostly ranches and expanded ranches. On occasion, a waterfront home can command up to $8 million. Properties are typically between a quarter-acre and 1 acre.
