Fire Island Hotel & Resort, lists for $7M; 200 feet from ocean

The first portion of this 41-room Fire Island hotel was created by converting an early 1900s lifeboat station into an oceanfront getaway. Now listed for $7 million, the Fire Island Hotel & Resort, which is about 200 feet from the Atlantic Ocean and has a direct walkway to Ocean Bay Park Beach, includes four cottages, 25 standard rooms, 10 one-bedroom suites and a pair of studios.

After being decommissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard, the lifeboat station was sold to the Flynn family, who operated a bar and casino on the bay, around 1949, according to the hotel’s website. The current owners bought the property in 1989, and in June, the Fire Island Hotel & Resort began its 25th anniversary season.

Permits are being obtained for various upgrades, according to the listing, and another “ultramodern” structure that will yield eight new rooms is in the development process, says C.J. Mingolelli of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, who is listing the property with Michael Murphy.

Set on more than an acre, the hotel is designed in the style of a “grand square, with the pool being in the middle of it all,” says Mingolelli. There is a tiki bar, a poolside lounge, a coffee shop and outdoor showers, as well as a playground and additional outdoor event space.

Located about five miles from the Fire Island Lighthouse and nine miles from Captree State Park, the hotel is accessible from the Bay Shore passenger ferry.
