Glen Cove mansion for sale traces roots to Charles Pratt of Standard Oil

Charles Pratt, a partner of the Standard Oil Co. and founder of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, bought a country home in Glen Cove in the late 1800s and purchased hundreds of surrounding acres of land to pass on to his children.
Some of the Pratt family mansions are now known as the Webb Institute, Glen Cove Mansion Hotel & Conference Center and the Glengariff Healthcare Center.
Another home -- a stone and slate-roofed mansion built in 1950 by Pratt’s granddaughter, Florence, and her husband, Frank Powell, of Mobil Oil -- is for sale at $4.9 million.
It’s the second Pratt house in Glen Cove currently on the market.
Overlooking Dosoris Pond and Long Island Sound, the three-acre property offers “commanding western water views and breathtaking sunsets,” says Debra Quinn Petkanas, listing agent with Sandi Lefkowitz of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty.
There are original garden walls, walkways, two fountains, plus a Japanese garden and water feature.
The 21-room house has “beautifully detailed” medallion woodworking, wide-plank floors and elaborate paneling, says Petkanas.
Most of the furnishings are included.
The other Pratt home is listed for $5.5 million and is currently hosting the Home Is Where the Heart Is designer show house.
