When John Gosman Sr., the driving force behind the Gosman complex of restaurants and shops at the dock in Montauk, wanted a home built in the area, he was drawn to contemporary architecture. In 1975, he had a 2,567-square-foot home built in the Hither Hills area of Montauk. His middle son, Chris Gosman, said that when the house on Edison Road was finished, it was the largest in Montauk. The senior Gosman died in 2021, and now his five-bedroom, three-bathroom home is on the market for $5.65 million with annual taxes of $11,250.

“There were very few houses in Montauk, and it really stood out because of its size and its modern style, with a lot of windows and redwood," said Gosman, who was 8 when his family moved into the house. "When our friends would come over they’d be like, 'wow!' "

He added that his father had been passionate about the aesthetics. The family particularly appreciated the privacy of the 1.12-acre property, which has many trees and an in-ground, freeform pool. “It really was kind of like our own world," Gosman said, "and it still has that sense of peace, a feeling of seclusion and privacy.”

He noted that the living room/great room is a two-story open space with two glass walls, a redwood wall, a fireplace and cathedral ceiling, and that each bedroom has its own sliding glass door to a deck.

The home, which is in the Montauk School District, is a few blocks from the ocean and as part of Hither Hills enjoys private beach access, said Margaret Harvey, an associate real estate broker at Town & Country Real Estate.

Harvey, who is co-listing the house with Cynthia Ann Ibrahim, noted that the house has redwood statement walls throughout. “While the main level is spacious, it still has the feeling of warmth and coziness, and every room naturally flows from one end to the other — it is built for entertaining," she said.

An open house will be held June 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
