'Green' company to make first Long Island moves

What do you get when you cross responsibly harvested bamboo furniture with disposable Styrofoam packing peanuts? A frustrating exercise in self-defeat for the green-conscious who need to get their stuff from here to there.

Happily, among businesses jockeying for greener-than-thou bragging rights are some New York movers that service Long Island. Little by little, moving companies have been making the process less distasteful to the green-at-heart, with offerings like online cardboard box exchanges, reusable plastic crates and moving trucks fueled by biodiesel.

iMoveGREEN, a new Hillside, N.J.- and Bronx-based company serving Long Island, may have pulled ahead of the pack when it tucked this bright green feather into its cap: Its eco-friendly practices have qualified it as an EPA Green Power Partner – to date, the only moving company to do so. The company, which opened for business this month, is the eco-friendly reinvention of the former Meyer’s Moving & Storage.

So far, the company has moves planned March 26 from Great Neck to Manhattan and April 3 from Brooklyn to Cutchogue.

In addition to the obvious things like using biodegradable packing peanuts and reusable boxes, the company uses wind energy to power its facilities, prints its marketing materials on recycled paper using soy ink, requires its surveyors to drive hybrid Toyota Priuses, gives each client a small tree as a housewarming gift, uses only green cleaning products and washes its trucks with recycled water. And to the green living three-Rs mantra of reduce, reuse and recycle, they’ve added a fourth R – renew: The company plants trees in the Brazilian Rainforest with The Nature Conservancy on behalf of every client who moves with iMoveGreen.
