Jane and Walter Maynard Jr. say they understand that whoever buys their 125-year-old East Hampton home can do with it what they like, but they’re hopeful someone with an appreciation for history will pick up the $17.995 million tab.
“We’d like to sell it to someone who will keep it the way it is,” she says. “We’ve had it all these years and enjoyed it many years.”
The 6.7 acres for sale on Georgica Road were originally part of a family compound built in 1891 by collector William E. Wheelock. Three houses were built on more than 20 acres, although the Maynards purchased just 10.7 acres in 1977 from a son, the poet John Hall Wheelock.
Measuring about 4,500 square feet, the lot’s primary structure includes four bedrooms, three bathrooms, an entry vestibule leading to a two-story open hall, an eat-in-kitchen and a library. A renovation in 1980 left many original details intact, including the now-exposed ceiling beams, wood flooring and handrails on staircases.
The homeowners converted a shed into an unheated guesthouse with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room.
Outside, the property is also home to a heated gunite pool and an all-weather tennis court.
