What millennial home buyers want: Tips from the experts
Nine millennial home buyers tell what it was that sold them on the houses they bought.
Kamryn Mogul and Blake Famulari, Massapequa Park
Famulari, 28, director of relationship development for Broadridge Financial Solutions, and Mogul, 25, who is in production and product development for Tory Burch handbags, closed on their three-bedroom, 1 1/2-bathroom home for $538,000 in December. They are getting married this year.
WHY THEY BOUGHT IT The couple liked the open floor plan, which is rare for a house built more than 40 years ago.
“We were looking for something that was turnkey ready, that has good bones and a strong foundation, but that wasn’t done too much to someone else’s specifications,” Famulari says.
Omar and Tracy Clennon, Freeport
Omar, 37, an architect, and Tracy, 35, a medical sales manager for an infant probiotic company, bought their three-bedroom home for $285,000 in December 2016 and moved in this past October after renovations. They got married last year.
WHY THEY BOUGHT IT “We knew we wanted to renovate, and we felt it was a good canvas to work from,” Omar says. “It was something that had potential, a layout we could work with and good bones.”
Tracy says most millennials are “looking to create their own value.”
John Oliveira and Paulina Pecak, Huntington
Oliveira, 29, an operating engineer for the Local 15 union, and Pecak, 25, a freelance makeup artist, closed on the three-bedroom, 2 1/2-bathroom house in October for $665,000. They plan to get married this summer.
WHY THEY BOUGHT IT They fell in love with the yard, which is large and private and has an above-ground pool and hot tub. “It looks like you’re on vacation, away from home,” Pecak says.
Ingrid Cifuentes, Valley Stream
Cifuentes, 29, a medical technologist for Northwell Health, purchased a four-bedroom, one-bathroom home for $335,000 in June.
WHY SHE BOUGHT IT “It was cozy — it wasn’t too huge — and it was well taken care of,” she says.
Brittany and Richard Linchangco, Deer Park
Brittany, 28, a nurse practitioner, and Richard, 30, who works as a project manager in the HVAC industry, bought an updated house with a large den. They got married last year.
WHY THEY BOUGHT IT The open layout, which is perfect for entertaining, they say.
