The scoop. Good things have been happening in Nesconset. For starters, the redevelopment of the 42-acre site on Smithtown Boulevard where the vacant National Guard Armory sits is coming to fruition.

The armory is being renovated to house the Nesconset branch of the Smithtown Library. "We're waiting to hear on a date, but we should be moving into the new building sometime in the spring," says Claire Dispirito, a reference librarian.

Neighboring the library is a fairly new 18-acre park, offering in part a playground, a half-mile walking trail, athletic fields and restrooms. "It's heavily utilized," says Frank DeRubeis, director of planning for the Town of Smithtown. Another popular draw is the gazebo.

Among upcoming projects, says Nesconset Chamber of Commerce president Steven Gargiulo, is the installation of decorative street lamps along Smithtown Boulevard.

Margaret Remhild, a 42-year resident and agent for Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Smithtown, refers to Nesconset as a very friendly place with a strong community feeling. The area, which has been attracting young families, also offers restaurants, shops and easy access to major highways.
