Opera singer's former Belle Terre estate for sale at $1.786 million
Famed late opera singer Eleanor Steber, who began her career in 1940, once lived in this 1918 Belle Terre estate, which is on the market for $1.786 million.
One of Steber's former neighbors, Carol Acker, says she remembers the soprano quite well. "She was absolutely stunning, kind of flamboyant, and had a lovely voice that carried," Acker says.
She says Steber would stand on the balcony, which wraps around the property, and sing without even clearing her throat. "Her voice flowed through the neighborhood -- that's how I developed a passion for opera."
Acker, along with her daughter, Alexia Poulos, both of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, are now the listing agents for the estate.
Today, that very balcony offers sweeping views of the 2.38-acre landscape.
The home was completely renovated in 2011. Grand living spaces, multiple suites, a gourmet kitchen and three fireplaces, as well as five bedrooms and 4 1/2 bathrooms, are among the home's features.
