Pond House in East Hampton listed for $28.95 million

This East Hampton mansion with 12,000 square feet of living space, now listed for $28.95 million, includes hand-carved, heated bathtubs among its custom amenities.

The seven-bedroom home with seven full bathrooms and two half baths is called The Pond House for good reason — situated on 1.9 elevated acres, the property has more than 200 feet of waterfront on Georgica Pond and is buffered by a 17-acre Nature Conservancy meadow preserve.

Designed by architect Stanford White, the home was built in 1900 for artist Edward Simmons, a noted muralist whose work was commissioned by the Library of Congress and the Waldorf Astoria hotel, among others. The home was rotated during a 2005 renovation by Jeffrey Colle to maximize the Georgica Pond views, according to a 2005 report in the East Hampton Star.

Colle drew inspiration from Europe for the home’s ornate, airy interior, importing hand-carved, heated marble bathtubs, 18th-century Louis XV hand-carved stone fireplaces, hand-pegged parquet de Versailles floors and quarter-sawn white oak paneling finished with a French chalk finish.

A massive, light-filled great room with balconies above includes two of the home’s seven fireplaces, as well as a wall of windows overlooking Georgica Pond.

“He took this old-world craftsmanship and turned it into a modern-day masterpiece,” says listing agent Lori Schiaffino, of Compass Realty. She is co-listing with Washington Duke.

The grounds include a heated, 25-by-45-foot waterfront infinity-edged pool and spa. An outdoor grilling area is surrounded by a wraparound Turkish limestone terrace, and there is a screened porch with a fireplace.

The 1,800-square-foot guest cottage has been fully renovated, and has a living room, full kitchen, two bedrooms and a full bathroom. Like the main house, the guesthouse has a second-floor with views of manicured lawns.
