St. James mansion, once hunt-fish club, lists for $1.199 million

A Federal-style mansion on more than 13 acres along the Nissequogue River in St. James, listed for $1.199 million, was originally the home of the Rassapeague Club, a hunting and fishing club founded by a wealthy man named Edward Thompson, who at one point served as the forest, fish and game commissioner for New York State.

"In the spring, with the opening of the trout season, members of the Rassapeague Club would come out from the city to stay at the clubhouse on a weekend or a holiday and spend their time fishing for the stocked trout in the club's trout ponds or fishing for the trout that were released in the river," writes Smithtown historian Bradley Harris in an article about the club.

The six-bedroom brick house with six bathrooms and a half-bath was converted to a private residence in the 1930s. It has been expanded and renovated and features a ballroom-sized great room with 15-foot ceilings and chevron inlaid wood floors. There's also a formal dining room with a tray ceiling, a fireplace and detailed millwork.

Also on the property are a 2,900-square-foot detached garage and an in-ground gunite pool.
