Stony Brook millionaire Jonas Smith's home hits market

Built by ship captain Jonas Smith — who is known as Stony Brook’s first millionaire — this historic Stony Brook Victorian is on the market for $595,000, says listing agent Michael Ardolino of Realty Connect USA.

Built circa 1836, the three-bedroom, 2½-bath house comes with a local historical society plaque. The home features hardwood floors, two original fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room and a den that overlooks the patio.

The home’s library has floor-to-ceiling cherry bookshelves and a built-in desk that is right below a glass display cabinet.

And the master bedroom, which has an en suite bath, features skylights, which flood the room with light. Although the exterior and roof were both renovated in 2009, the house has kept its old-world charm, Ardolino says.

A large front porch allows residents to “imagine how, back in the 1800s, someone was sitting there in a rocking chair and watching the horse and carriages go by,” Ardolino says.

The back of the property features a small brick walkway, and two sitting areas in the makeshift English garden.

Other features include a large foyer, a third-floor stand-up attic and a detached two-car garage, which has a large loft and once served as Orlando G. Smith’s butcher shop in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
