Why one Glen Head couple decided to go round
Daniel and Indira Moskowitz say they were looking for a unique home design for their Glen Head property (which, at that time, was the site of their 98-year-old Spanish Colonial home that eventually was demolished). Dan says he saw a story about Deltec Homes in Smart Homeowners magazine about three years ago. He and Indira were looking for a “spacious design with a modern look.” Dan adds, “It’s a little schizophrenic. We work in these modern sleek office buildings and then return to homes on Long Island that all look like they were built in the 19th century.”
So they set upon creating this energy efficient, circular, pre-engineered panelized home. The walls and trusses are built at the Deltec headquarters in Asheville, N.C., and then the homeowners have complete design freedom for the interior. The hard part was finding Long Island contractors knowledgeable about Deltec homes. The foundation alone was a challenge as it needed to accommodate a 17-sided structure.
The finished product is a round 2,600-square-foot, two-story home with a cathedral ceiling and loft on a quarter acre of land. It has an open floor plan with the kitchen flowing into the living room. An additional 1,500 square feet of space is in the basement.
The Moskowitzes plan to move in at the end of February. So far they “love the space, love the light.” And it’s already drawing lots of attention. People either stop or slow down. And the single most popular adjective they use is “cool.”
Dan Moskowitz says that the shell and the windows cost about $100,000. The entire project cost about $600,000.
