What’s new: Gabrielle Zevin’s novel inspired by Monica Lewinsky, a memoir by comedian Ms. Pat, Italian crime novel ‘Suburra’

YOUNG JANE YOUNG, by Gabrielle Zevin. A political intern has an affair with her boss, a married congressman. Sound familiar? Yes, the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal is one of the inspirations for this savvy novel, which eschews the tawdry to explore how the effects of Aviva Grossman’s affair ripple out through the years. “Young Jane Young” reminds us that the sexual double standard remains in place. RABBIT: The Autobiography of Ms. Pat, by Patricia Williams with Jeannine Amber. How did the author go from an impoverished Georgia childhood — alcoholic mom, petty crimes, teen pregnancy — to become a successful comedian with appearances on “Last Comic Standing” and “This Is Not Happening.” Well, as “Ms. Pat” explains it, she didn’t have a lot of job options — but everyone said she was funny. “Rabbit” proves it. SUBURRA, by Carlo Bonini and Giancarlo De Cataldo. This hefty Italian crime novel, translated by Antony Shuggar, will be the basis for a 10-part Netflix original series coming in the fall. Set in contemporary Rome, “Suburra” is chock-full of corrupt politicians, priests, prostitutes, hoodlums and, of course, Mafiosi, in a struggle for control of a multibillion-euro gambling development on the coast.
