Actress Angie Harmon and former New York Giants cornerback Jason Sehorn are separating after 13 years of marriage.

"For the sake of their children, they ask for respect and privacy as they navigate this time in their lives," Harmon's representative said Monday in a statement confirming the breakup. The couple has three daughters: Finley, 11, Avery, 9, and Emery, 5.

Harmon, 42, a "Law & Order" cast member from 1998 to 2001, stars as police detective Jane Rizzoli in TNT's "Rizzoli & Isles." Sehorn, 43, played for the Giants from 1994 to 2002 before spending a season with the St. Louis Rams, and since 2011 has been a college football analyst on ESPNU.

He and Harmon married in June 2001. Sehorn previously was married to then-broadcast journalist Whitney Casey. This was Harmon's first marriage.

Sehorn had proposed to model-turned-actress Harmon on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Oct. 13, 1998, when she was a guest. After Harmon declined to answer Leno's questions about her romantic life, the host then brought out Sehorn, who, on bended knee, presented her with a diamond ring.

Harmon's father was in the audience, and musical guest Elton John serenaded the couple with a song from the movie "The Road to Eldorado."

Harmon has not commented on her Twitter page, but on Sunday tweeted encouraging words to a fan. "Life is hard but Don't give up," she posted. "We all have tough times, often unbearable. Keep going & don't give up! DONT EVER GIVE UP!"

Sehorn reportedly has been living in North Carolina while Harmon remained with their daughters in Los Angeles.
