Merriam-Webster defines a “diva” as “a usually glamorous and successful female performer or personality,” and although there is no shortage of “glamorous” entertainers on the celebrity scene, some don’t just make the grade, but lead the pack. Here are some ladies who have earned undeniable diva status.

Ciara

The Grammy Award-winning artist Ciara has earned 25 certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America. She also has scored the attention of the media with her physique and fashion sense, such as with the dress, pictured, she wore to the 58th annual Grammy Awards.

Whitney Houston

The late Whitney Houston (1963-2012), also one of Billboard's 10 Greatest Artists of All Time, has sold more than 200 million albums. She also won six Grammy Awards, only part of the 400-plus various honors Houston achieved in her lifetime.

Carole King

A five-time Grammy Award winner and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Carole King has not only sold more than 20 million copies of her album "Tapestry" (1971), but she's also written or co-written more than 100 songs that have landed on the Billboard pop music chart.

Aretha Franklin

Widely known as "The Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin has won 18 Grammy Awards and was the first women to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she's had 20 singles chart as Number One hits.

Mariah Carey

The Greenlawn native has sold more than 200 million records during her career, scoring the most Number One hit singles in the United States for a solo artist, second only to The Beatles. Carey has won five Grammy Awards, and is one of Billboard's 10 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Gloria Estefan

A winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as seven Grammy Awards, Estefan has sold approximately 100 million records around the globe.

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand may be the most accomplished diva in entertainment history: She's an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award) winner, with two Academy Awards and eight Grammys in her trophy cabinet. She's been determined the Recording Industry Association of America's highest-selling American female albums artist (with 68.5 million certified platinum or gold), she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Billboard magazine states that Streisand has had the most Top 10 albums by a female artist in history (with 33, second only to the Rolling Stones).

Demi Lovato

Certified 29 times by the Recording Industry Association of America, pop singer Demi Lovato first found fame as a cast member of the kids show "Barney & Friends," then struck a chord with older children as a co-star of the Disney Channel television film "Camp Rock" (2008). She's also garnered more than 40 million followers on Twitter and more than 50 million on Instagram.

Shania Twain

Shania Twain has sold more than 80 million records in a career that moved between the pop and country music genres; she's won five Grammy Awards, but has been nominated 17 times.

Madonna

Guinness World Records states that Madonna has sold more than 300 million albums in her career, and that between June 2012 and June 2013 she earned $125 million, the highest annual earnings ever for a female pop star. The Recording Industry Association of America has declared Madonna (a seven-time Grammy winner) the second highest-selling female albums artist in the United States, with more than 64 million albums certified platinum or gold.

Celia Cruz

Winner of three Grammy Awards and four Latin Grammy Awards, the late Celia Cruz (1925-2003) was awarded a Grammy lifetime achievement award in 2016. Known as the "Queen of Salsa," she had 23 albums certified gold (500,000 sold) by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Britney Spears

With 34 million albums sold in her career, Britney Spears is the eighth-most successful female artist on the Recording Industry Association of America chart. Also a Grammy Award winner, she's had 34 songs reach the Billboard magazine "Hot 100" chart, and made a notable impact with her music videos, which earned her an MTV Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

Rihanna

A winner of eight Grammy Awards, Rihanna is one of the few under-30 divas on this list (born Feb. 20, 1988). Despite her age, she has already scored 14 Number One hits on the Billboard magazine "Hot 100" chart, selling more than 13 million albums and achieved (by July 15, 2015, per the Recording Industry Association of America) more than 100 million platinum and song certifications, making Rihanna the first artist in history to exceed 100 million RIAA singles awards.

Tina Turner

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Tina Turner has scored eight Grammy Awards during her career. She is often referred to as "The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll."

Jennifer Lopez

The entertainer, who also goes by J-Lo, first found success as a Hollywood actress, appearing in such films as "Money Train" (1995), "Out of Sight" (1998) and "Selena" (1997). She's since received more than 30 certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America, appeared in more movies and served as a judge on "American Idol."

Celine Dion
