Brad Pitt, others on Angelina Jolie's decision to have double mastectomy
Family members and other women in the entertainment community are applauding Oscar winner Angelina Jolie for revealing Tuesday that she underwent a double mastectomy after discovering she was at high risk for breast cancer.
"Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as [that of] so many others like her, absolutely heroic," her fiance, Brad Pitt, told the London Evening Standard. "I thank our medical team for their care and focus. All I want is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children," he continued. "This is a happy day for our family."
The actor's mother, Jane Pitt, said in a statement, "We're so very proud of Angie, this means so much to our family, especially our grandchildren. We love her dearly." Jolie's brother, James Haven, said in a separate statement, "My sister like our mother always put her children first. I am so grateful to be her brother."
E! News co-anchor Giuliana Rancic, who underwent the procedure in Oct. 2011 after being diagnosed with breast cancer, also tweeted her support: "Proud of her for using her incredible platform to educate women."
