Celebs' kids aren't always smash hits

As the daughter of onetime Genesis drummer and Brit-soul vocalist Phil Collins, "Mortal Instruments" star Lily Collins would be presumed to have a leg up on the competition: The offspring of celebrities not only get doors to open, they know where the doors are. But the track record of screen-bound pop-star progeny isn't really all that glittery. Consider the following:

LIV TYLER The daughter of Aerosmith's Steve Tyler and onetime Playboy Playmate Bebe Buell, Tyler broke out with the Sundance movie "Heavy" in 1995, but has never gotten much beyond the ethereal winsomeness that marks most of her performances (notably the half-Elven beauty Arwen in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy). She has several productions in the works for this year, so maybe things will improve.

DONOVAN LEITCH and IONE SKYE The children of "Mellow Yellow" man and '60s folkie icon Donovan, the sibs have had uneven careers. He has appeared in such TV series as "ER" and "Sex and the City," as well as playing Factory fixture Gerard Malanga in "I Shot Andy Warhol." She achieved a certain immortality playing John Cusack's object of worship in "Say Anything" and has done solid work in a slew of independents, as well as resurfacing recently on "Arrested Development."

MILEY CYRUS It's hard to say whether Billy Ray Cyrus is technically a star or whether his daughter's 15 minutes are officially over, but she had a great run on the Disney Channel in "Hannah Montana," and is insisting on hanging around.

BIJOU PHILLIPS Daughter of actress Genevieve Waite and John Phillips, founder of the Mamas and the Papas, Bijou Phillips has had a itinerant indie-film career, as well as a recurring role in the current TV series "Raising Hope."

NANCY SINATRA Despite Frank's able assistance, her success as an actress was just slightly less convincing than her work as a singer ("are you ready boots?"). Sinatra appeared in such classics as "Get Yourself a College Girl," "The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini" and TV's immortal "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." (as Coco Cool).
