"Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon has married her fiancee, education activist Christine Marinoni.

"On May 27, 2012, Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend, Christine Marinoni, were legally married in the state of New York," Nixon's representative said in a statement to People magazine Monday. "Nixon wore a custom dress by Carolina Herrera." No other details were made available.

Nixon, 46, and Marinoni, 45, announced their engagement at a 2009 rally to support same-sex marriage in New York, which eventually became legal last June, and took effect 30 days later. Marinoni proposed a month before the 2009 rally, "Access Hollywood" said at the time, and presented Nixon with a diamond engagement ring.

The couple became parents in last February when Marinoni gave birth to their first child, Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni. Nixon herself has two children -- daughter Samantha, born in 1996, and son Charles, born in 2002 -- with photographer Danny Mozes, whom she dated from 1988 to 2003.

Nixon engendered controversy early this year when she told The New York Times Magazine that, for her, being gay was "a choice. I understand that for many people it's not, but for me it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me."

She quickly clarified in an interview with the magazine The Advocate that, "While I don't often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual. I believe bisexuality is not a choice, it is a fact. What I have 'chosen' is to be in a gay relationship."
