Singer Jason Derulo said Monday that hectic careers and pressures to get married were largely behind his recent breakup with singer Jordin Sparks.
"I'm seeing all kind of stories about, you know, somebody getting pregnant, you know, infidelity . . . things like me calling it off because of me being too busy and because of my newfound success," Derulo, 25, said in an "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" radio interview. "There was a lot of tension in our relationship for a lot of different reasons," he explained. "There was a lot of pressures of marriage. There was a lot of arguing and stuff like that, that just weighed on our relationship over time, you know. And when you stop having more good times than bad times, it's time to call it quits."
Despite having written the song "Marry Me," which starred Sparks, 24, in its music video, Derulo said he was not ready for commitment.
He added that the couple, who had been together for three years, weren't quite on speaking terms just yet. "I wouldn't say good terms," Derulo said. "I'll be lying if I said that, but it's not a bad situation. You know, there's no bad blood."
Season-six "American Idol" winner Sparks, daughter of former New York Giant Phillippi Sparks, appeared cheerful Monday during an appearance on "Today," telling Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, "I'm good, actually. The funny thing is that I read this quote . . . yesterday -- it said, 'When something unexpected happens in your life or you think something bad happens, just say, "Plot twist!" and move on.' "
