LI's top celebrity stories of 2018: Gibson attends high-school reunion, Bieber directs traffic, more

Whether they’re here to shoot movies and TV shows, coming home to their roots or just having their car break down in the Hamptons, numerous celebrities and a parade of productions visited Long Island this year. Here are some of the more memorable instances.

MARCH

‘BROOKLYN’ BY THE BEACH Writer-director-star Edward Norton shot some of his 1950s crime drama, “Motherless Brooklyn,” on the Wantagh State Parkway near Jones Beach on March 19 and 20. The Jonathan Lethem novel adaptation also filmed at Gold Coast Studios in Bethpage — where Mineola and Stony Brook native Kevin James’ sitcom “Kevin Can Wait” also shot its second season until being canceled this spring.

JUNE

INTO THE WOODS Three-time U.S. Open golf champion Tiger Woods docked his 155-foot yacht, “Privacy,” at the Gurney’s Yacht Club marina in Montauk in early June, ahead of competing in this year’s tourney at Shinnecock Hills.

DOG GONE On Sunday, June 17, Maria Menounos left her car on the Southern State Parkway near Hempstead Village to join several other people trying to capture a lost pet. “Terrier dog running southern state pkwy with collar/tags,” the TV personality tweeted. “Unable to catch ran into woods at an exit prob 19/20. so many of us. praying whoever lost this beautiful dog finds it. it was very careful ironically looking both ways but it was terrifying!”

MODEL EVENING Elle, Vogue and Glamour cover girl Bella Hadid joined several Oceanside High students on June 25 at a pre-prom private party, posing for photos with them. “There was some connection among people who knew her and knew some of the families involved,” explained Oceanside School District spokeswoman Donna Kraus.

ADVENTURELAND TIME “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” star Ellie Kemper and series co-creator Tina Fey visited Adventureland amusement park in Farmingdale on June 27 to shoot part of an episode of the Netflix comedy series. The park remained open, with a mixture of extras and regular attendees in front of the Turbulence roller coaster and in the area around the saucer-shaped ride the Frisbee.

JULY

LEAVE IT TO BIEBER On July 2, pop star Justin Bieber and his future wife — model and “Drop the Mic” co-host Hailey Baldwin (whose father and uncles are the Baldwin actor brothers of Massapequa) — briefly became stranded when his car stalled at the intersection of Old Stone Highway and Town Lane in Amagansett. The singer gamely directed vehicles around the breakdown while waiting for his Mercedes-Benz to be towed. Later that month he was photographed in New York wearing a Massapequa High School Chiefs hoodie.

AUGUST

FALLON ANGEL “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon delighted two couples dining together at Il Mulino in Wainscott on Aug. 27 when he spontaneously paid their $1,136 dinner tab, with tip. General manager Enzo Lentini said the comic, who was eating at an adjacent table with his producer wife, Nancy Juvonen, had appreciated the weekending New Yorkers’ discretion in letting them eat undisturbed.

SEPTEMBER

PALTROW IN LOVE “Shakespeare in Love” Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow and “Glee” and “American Horror Story” co-creator Brad Falchuk married at Paltrow’s estate on Old Montauk Highway in Amagansett on Sept. 29. The couple had held their rehearsal dinner the night before at the East Hampton mansion of comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his wife, Jessica. Attendees included director-producer Steven Spielberg and his wife, former actress Kate Capshaw; Robert Downey Jr. and his producer wife, Susan Downey; Rob Lowe and his wife, Sheryl Berkoff; Cameron Diaz and her musician husband, Benji Madden; and the bride’s mother, actress Blythe Danner.

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER

D.C. ON L.I. NBC’s “The Blacklist” came to Hempstead Town Hall on Oct. 5. While star James Spader wasn’t there, that municipal building at 1 Washington St., along with its Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion plaza, served as two Washington, D.C., exteriors: that of a hotel and of Cannon House, the office building for members of the House of Representatives. Additionally, the crew staged a congressional committee meeting inside.

GIBSON GIRL Merrick-raised music star Debbie Gibson returned for her 30th high-school reunion on Oct. 13, joining her Sanford H. Calhoun High classmates for the event at Kasey’s Kitchen and Cocktails in Rockville Centre. She had arrived with no advance word, to the surprised delight of the hundred or so attendees.

GO ON, SHUE For five days between Oct. 25 and Nov. 2, the TNT drama pilot “Constance,” starring Elisabeth Shue in the title role, filmed in Point Lookout. Locations included Lido Boulevard as well as Ted’s Fishing Station and its attached bar, The Shell Shack. It was unclear if Shue or co-stars Sharon Gless and Kevin Dunn were shooting or if the production was simply capturing exteriors.

‘LOST’ IN THE EAST END From Oct. 26 to Nov. 9, the Netflix movie “Lost Girls,” about the Gilgo Beach murders, shot for multiple days throughout the East End. Kenney’s Beach in Southold became Gilgo Beach and the community of Oak Beach, and other locations included Leeton Drive, Kenneys Road and the Mattituck Motel in Mattituck. “The Office” actress Amy Ryan plays Mari Gilbert, mother of one of the sex workers found dead in the area.

SOMETHING TO CROWE ABOUT Russell Crowe sang and played guitar at the YMCA Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore on Nov. 16, during the encore of a concert by folk-rocker Alan Doyle, his longtime songwriting partner. The Academy Award winner told the crowd he was living on Long Island through May (while shooting a Showtime miniseries in which he stars as former Fox News chief Roger Ailes). Crowe, who had played the title role in the Oyster Bay-filmed “Noah” (2014), told the crowd, “I’m back on Long Island with my people.”
