His latest movie may have disappointed audiences and critics alike, but Mark Wahlberg still ranked as the highest-paid male actor this year in Forbes magazine’s annual list.
Jumping from No. 12 last year, Wahlberg, 46, took the top slot with an estimated $68 million earned between June 1, 2016, and June 1, 2017. Despite “Transformers: The Last Knight” underperforming, his salary guarantees for that film and the upcoming “Daddy’s Home 2” helped put him over, along with his production stake in the A&E reality show “Wahlburgers” and commercials for AT&T, said Forbes.
He displaced last year’s No. 1, Dwayne Johnson, who headlined the drowned “Baywatch,” but still earned $65 million this year to secure second place.
Coming in at No. 3, four spots north of last year, with $54.5 million, is Vin Diesel, 50, who starred in the hits “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” and “The Fate of the Furious,” and voiced Groot in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
A surprise at No. 4 is Adam Sandler ($50.5 million), 50, who released no theatrical features last year and only starred in two streaming films released by Netflix.
International action star Jackie Chan, 63, at No. 5 with $49 million, is one of four Asian actors on the list, along with Bollywood heavyweights Shah Rukh Khan (No. 8, $38 million), Salman Khan (No. 9, $37 million) and Akshay Kumar (No. 10, $35.5 million). Also in the top 10 were Robert Downey Jr. ($48 million) in sixth place and Tom Cruise at No. 7 with $43 million.
Forbes bases its pretax gross estimates on data from Box Office Mojo, comScore, IMDb and Nielsen, plus interviews with industry insiders.
